Tablet sales have been struggling over the last few years. Handset screen sizes have been slowly encroaching on tablet displays and there usually aren't enough new features to warrant upgrading to a new tablet every few years. However, tablet sales could benefit from the pandemic as many people forced to work from home are purchasing a tablet to take care of business. Reddit VP: 'Ya, we f*cked up.'

Image
Reddit botched the rollout of a new feature that could have endangered some vulnerable users — and now it is eating crow.On Wednesday, Reddit announced that it was initiating a limited rollout of a new group chat feature called "Start Chatting" that would allow subreddit members to speak directly with each other in chatrooms. It was originally positioned as a way for Redditors to connect with people during COVID-19 social distancing. The problem? Not only was there no way for communities to opt out of the feature, but moderators also would not be able to, well, moderate them. In the over 1,500 comments to the original announcement, many mods quickly pointed out that this made the chat function ripe for abuse by trolls. Read more... Apple releases iOS 13.5 beta with contact tracing API and update for Group FaceTime

Image
Earlier today we told you that and that one of the changes coming to the iPhone will help those who have been frustrated with Face ID's inability to recognize a user wearing a face mask. Swiping up from the bottom of the Home screen will take an iPhone user directly to the passcode screen instead of having to wait for Face ID to kick him there. The idea is not to give an iPhone user a reason to take his mask off just to activate Face ID.
As it turns out, the iOS 13.5 beta carries a lot more goodies for iOS users. First, we should point out that the beta released today ...

'Bon voyage': Elon Musk tells Twitter followers to get lost following melt down

Image
Elon Musk is having a rough 24 hours, and if his Twitter followers don't like it, then they can just get bent. The Tesla CEO made waves late last night for a bizarre rant about "freedom," only to completely melt down during a Wednesday Tesla earnings call when asked about Bay Area shelter-in-place orders. Musk's appetite for self-righteousness apparently wasn't sated, however, and following the call he hopped on Twitter to tell his 33.4 million followers that if they didn't like his misrepresentation of facts then they should get lost. Notably, Musk claimed incorrectly (among other things) that Bay Area officials are "forcibly imprisoning people in their homes." To be clear, they are not.  Read more... More about Twitter, Tesla, Elon Musk, Coronavirus, and Tech

Elon Musk calls stay-at-home order ‘fascist’ during Tesla earnings call

Elon Musk had even more to say about social distancing measures after he rage-tweeted on the topic Wednesday morning.Tesla's first quarter earnings call Wednesday afternoon started with prepared marks from CEO Elon Musk that noticeably and awkwardly avoided mentioning coronavirus or anything about the pandemic. But as the call progressed, Musk's true feelings about shelter-in-place requirements, like those in the Bay Area that are keeping his Fremont, California car plant shut down until at least June, surfaced. Reporter expertly dodged falling lights on live TV and never stopped delivering the news

Image
Nothing was going to stop NBC's Kristen Welker from delivering the news. Not howling winds. Not the added struggle of talking through a facemask. And certainly not a couple of falling lighting fixtures. Welker was reporting live in D.C. on Wednesday, covering Attorney General William Barr's comments on coronavirus shutdowns. Suddenly, strong gusts of wind sent tall lighting fixtures crashing to the ground. Yet she still tried to keep delivering the news. Watch the impressive moves from Welker yourself. Unfazed, Welker shrugged it off on-air, saying "We're OK, they fell in front of me." The internet was quick to praise Welker for being unflappable. The reporter herself retweeted a couple of jokes, including one that said she had "first-round pocket presence" as she dodged the lights. If you want to start making your own sourdough, start with this DIY tracker

Image
A sourdough starter is far more than just a substitute for store-bought yeast. For Christine Sunu, each starter is a spectacle of life: Feed it water and flour consistently, and it will become a sluggish blob that breathes, bubbles, and grows. Introduce it to a dough, and the starter will proliferate and breathe life into what would otherwise become a flat, dense loaf. Put it in the freezer, and it will hibernate in its dormant state. Ignore it, and it will die.“It’s a really neat idea that you can have this critter that consistently makes a certain kind of bread and that potentially changes over time and grows with you,” Sunu, the designer and inventor of sourd.io — a data tracker that monitors a starter’s rise, ambient temperature, and ambient humidity in real time — told me during a recent phone call.  Read more...
