Jolla announces Sailfish 3, support for new smartphones and 4G feature phones

Image
Jolla made a couple of announcements during Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, all concerning its Sailfish operating system. First off, the Finnish company unveiled the third major iteration of Sailfish OS, which brings lots of new features and improvements to those using smartphones powered by the platform.

Then, Jolla confirmed Sailfish OS will now be supported by another Sony smartphone, the Xperia XA2, as well as the Gemini PDA and INOI tablets. Finally, as hard to believe as it may be, it appears that Sailfish will soon be available for feature phones.

According to Jolla's co-founder ...

AT&T's 'unlimited' data throttling lawsuit to go ahead, paving the way for net neutrality repeal

Image
Uh oh, it seems that the Federal Trade Commission does have jurisdiction over carriers like AT&T, it seems, as the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the FTC’s regulatory authority over large ISPs today, despite AT&T arguing in court that it is just a "common carrier," to avoid another oversight. What does all of it mean in practice?
Well, the FTC vs AT&T case was over "throttling" (now called "data de-prioritization") on advertised "unlimited" plans way back in 2014. It's not only AT&T that does that, of course, but all other carriers as well, to ...

Verizon to launch 5G hotspots (pucks) in 2018 because 5G phones won't arrive in time

Image
Just like AT&T suggested late last month, the first mobile devices usable on 5G networks will be puck-shaped hotspots, not smartphones. ZTE is one of the few handset makers that confirmed it will bring 5G smartphones in the US at some point, but AT&T and Verizon don't believe a 5G smartphone will be launched on the market by the time their 5G networks will be up and running.

During an interview with Bloomberg, Verizon's wireless chief, Ronan Dunne said that if there's anything available this year to support a 5G network, it's more likely to be a hotspot rather than a smartphone.

But ...

Samsung DeX Pad hands-on: new design, same core desktop experience

Image
With the announcement of its new flagships at MWC 2018, the S9 and S9+, Samsung naturally introduced a brand-new PC-desktop accessory in the form of the DeX Pad. It's referred to as a pad this time around, as opposed to last year's DeX station, seeing that there's one practical new application that sums up the logical naming. We got to check it out first hand at Samsung's booth at Mobile World Congress!

Gone is the puck shaped design with last year's DeX Station, replaced instead with a dull, flat looking all-plastic construction. Some might not be happy with the design, since they ...

Sunshine Jen: Love, Love, Love

Source: www.happyrobot.net --- Tuesday, February 27, 2018
It's Valentine’s Day today. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! I used to be down on Valentine’s Day with its paper hearts, corn syrup candy, and flowers that will die soon. Back in grade school, we used to have to decorate shoe boxes and pass out little pre-made Valentines. Even though it was a nice break from learning, it all felt dull especially when several people passed out the same pre-made Valentines. Then, as I got older, the Valentines pressure was on romantic love and going out to dinner with a partner or going out to dinner with friends when there was no partner. This year, Valentine’s Day is on a Wednesday, and I will admit, my plans include putting on my comfy fleece and watching Olympic Pairs Figure Skating. The celebrating and chocolate eating will happen on the weekend. But also, on this day of Love, I want to take a few hundred words to reflect on Love. It’s very easy to say there are many kinds of love. Romant…

4 things that would've made the Xperia XZ2 a better offer

Image
On schedule with its half-year refresh cycle, Sony dropped a brand-new flagship duo at MWC — the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact. And this time around, the company shook some things around, adopting more modern trends and saying goodbye to some old habits. The new Xperias have long 18:9 screens, back-mounted fingerprint scanners, and a bunch of new features — some unique, some playing catch-up with the industry.

We'd say the the Xperia XZ2 is the first exciting Sony flagship in a while and it looks to be a pretty solid phone. Some might be disapointed about the removal of a headphone jack, ...

Rumor mill: Unlocked Nokia 1, Nokia 6 2018 and Nokia 7 Plus will arrive in the US in Q2

Image
Despite the fact that Nokia smartphones are not available in the US through any of the major carriers, HMD Global brought in the country some of the most popular models as unlocked phones.

Nokia 2, 6 and 8 are already available in the US via Amazon, but they are not fully compatible with all US carriers. Apparently, the same will happen with the new wave of Nokia-branded phones that HMD introduced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 or earlier.

Hell freezes over as Apple confirms it's using Google servers to host iCloud data

Image
Apple has acknowledged that it is using rival Google's server solutions to host iCloud data, CNBC reported a few hours ago. The evidence for this notion can be tracked all the way back to one of the latest iOS security documents which is available for just about anyone to read on Apple's site. The document now clearly states that Apple is storing encrypted chunks of user data that reportedly have no tidbits of information that could be traced back to individual iCloud users.
Here's what the excerpt in questions states:

2018 edition Nokia 6 hands-on: one of the best mid-rangers got better

Image
The Nokia 6 from last year wasn't the best smartphone money could buy. Instead, it was made to be an excellent offering in its price range – a goal that was ultimately achieved. Following the same approach, the 2018-edition Nokia 6 is to launch globally in the coming months, and at MWC 2018, we had the chance to take it for a spin.
Once we picked it up, we instantly noticed that the new Nokia 6 has adopted a lot of the design DNA of its predecessor. It still feels solid in the hand with its flat sides and metal construction. But some things have changed. For ...

New Snapdragon 700-series unveiled, fusing premium features into the midrange

Image
Qualcomm just took us for surprise at the MWC 2018 expo booth, and announced its newest Snapdragon 700 system-on-a-chip. The SoC brings many of the features that the flagship 800-series commands downmarket, such as 2x faster on-device AI, compared to the current cream of the midrange crop, the Snapdragon 660.

Cat S61 hands-on: this phone shoots lasers and gives you thermal vision

Image
The Cat S61 is a big, ruggedized phone that can survive a 6-foot drop on concrete, can give you thermal vision superpowers and it shoots lasers, so when we saw the company's new handset at Mobile World Congress 2018 we were eager to see what it's all about.
The Cat S61 is a 5.2-inch phone with an LCD display, but it feels substantially bigger. The phone is built like a tank: tough, thick, with a rubberized back. It will fit inside a jeans pocket, but you won't be comfortable walking with this phone in your pocket. It's meant to be used for more extreme conditions and one thing ...
