Matador, Ivan Fandino, horrifically gored to death by bull in arena: “Hurry up, I’m dying.”
A famous and award winning bullfighter has died tragically after being gored by a bull in the arena. Ivan Fandino, a 36 year-old matador from Spain, tripped over his cape and that was the opening the bull was waiting for. He gored Fandino with his horn through his lung. The bull that hit him weighed more than half a ton. As he impaled the bullfighter, he threw him in the air.
Bullfighting is a traditional blood sport that has made Spain famous, but is practiced in many countries. It is a physical contest that generally involves attempting to publicly subdue, immobilize, or kill a bull, usually according to a set of rules. It’s a traditional sport in many countries including Spain, Portugal, parts of southern France, India and Tanzania, and some Latin American countries (Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Peru).
This happened in Mont-de-Marsan, France and the audience was horrified by the event. Fandino’s heart stopped in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. He sustained injuries to his lung and kidneys, but his heart just gave out. His last reported words were, “Hurry up, I’m dying!” Fandino leaves behind a wife and daughter. He hailed from Orduna in Bizkaia, Spain. He dreamed of becoming a bullfighter from the age of 14, even though it was not a family tradition. Fandino finally made his debut in 2005.
From the Daily Mail:
A renowned bullfighter has died after he tripped over his cape and was gored during a festival in France.
Ivan Fandino, a 36-year-old from Spain, had fallen to the ground as he got his feet caught in the material.
The rampaging bull, which weighed more than half a ton, then tossed him into the air and impaled him in the chest.
The married father-of-one’s last words were said to have been, ‘Hurry up, I’m dying!’ after he was carried out of the arena by fellow matadors.
He was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his lung and kidneys on Saturday, but he died on the way after suffering a heart attack.
The five-year-old bull’s name was Provechito, which is Spanish slang for ‘burp’. Fandino won an earlier fight against the bull and cut off its ear. The animal was also seriously injured in the later fight and was killed afterwards.
Fandino’s death comes less than a year after another Spanish matador, Victor Barrio, died in a fight in Spain.
A member of the crowd at the Corrida des Fetes – Bullfighting Festival – in Aire-sur-l’Adour, south France, said at first many spectators did not realise Fandino was in trouble.
‘Ivan was caught by surprise and suffered the consequences,’ the witness said. ‘People were cheering to begin with, thinking everything was under control.
‘Then we realised that Ivan was very badly hurt, and he was rushed away by other matadors, supported by paramedics.’
This was a bull that Fandino had sparred with before… last time he cut off Provechito’s ear. Looks like the bull remembered and got even. The bull was seriously injured and then put down after the attack. He is the second bullfighter to die in the arena in the last year. They are the first deaths since the 1990s. Fandino had been invited to take part in the 18th celebration of the San Isidro Fair. The Basque will be truly missed.
At first, no one realized how badly Fandino was hurt. Other matadors and paramedics rushed him off as soon as they knew he was seriously injured, but it was already too late. Matadors carry brightly colored capes to distract and maneuver bulls, which are bred especially for the spectacle. He was using it to distract the bull when his feet tangled in it and he fell. As he stood, the bull charged him. Spain’s royal family, politicians and the bullfighting world mourned Fandino’s death this weekend.
