HODL becomes a rallying cry in the midst of cryptocurrency crash

Image
Cryptocurrencies are crashing. People are panicking. The crypto faithful, however, abide by one word: HODL.HODL, an intentional typo of "hold," has become the rallying cry for cryptocurrency traders in the face of this recent Bitcoin crash, which has extended to other popular coins like Ethereum and Litecoin. It's an instruction for traders to, um, "hold" their Bitcoin instead of selling it. There's a certain emotion to it, pointing to the steadfast belief of some that blockchain-based currencies will change the world — and generate a lot of value for people holding crypto along the way. "HODL" is being tossed around by the crpto crowd the way U.S. soccer fans chant "I believe that we will win." Read more... More about Bitcoin, Dictionary, Cryptocurrency, Altcoins, and Hodl

Patrisse Cullors — activist, advocate, community organizer, and co-founder of #BlackLivesMatter — wants to set the record straight: "The story of Black Lives Matter starts before Black Lives Matter. The story of Black Lives Matter, for me, starts with my childhood."Since the monumental activist movement was created in 2013 by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi, Black Lives Matter has called attention to systems that keep Black communities oppressed, including mass incarceration and police violence. The movement gained national attention as it protested the acquittal of George Zimmerman after the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin, and the 2014 killing of Michael Brown, and the 2014 killing of Tamir Rice.  Read more... 'Fire and Fury' may become a TV series because there's not enough Trump coverage, I guess

Image
Michael Wolff's Fire and Fury could be adapted into a TV series — as if it could somehow top the 24-7 news cycle reality show hellstorm we're already living through. But it's 2018, so here we areThe Hollywood Reporter says that Endeavor Content has purchased the rights to Wolff's controversial tome for seven figures. SEE ALSO: Trump's first presidential physical prompts 'girther' conspiracy There's no network attached yet, but it could wind up anywhere, given the book veers from political drama to slapstick comedy to horror anthology. Isn’t this already a TV series, covered each and every day on cable news? https://t.co/3ao2AzHlKp— Matt Viser (@mviser) January 17, 2018Read more... Dark and Light Side versions of 'The Last Jedi' are a thing — but not in the U.S.

Image
You may be a Last Jedi superfan. You may have seen Rian Johnson's galaxy-sized hit five, 10, 15 times. But will you ever truly see it unless you've chosen to be on the Light Side or the Dark Side — with special effects to match?Light Side and Dark Side versions of Last Jedi are a thing in Japan. In the rest of the world, FOMO is a thing. SEE ALSO: 'Last Jedi' gets thumbs up from 89% of viewers, says new poll The special screenings, first reported by THR, come courtesy of 4DX, which describes itself as "the world's first 4D cinema company." Dude goes heli-skiing and immediately drops his ski down the mountain

Image
Most people take lifts to the top of a mountain at a resort in order to hit the slopes and ski down. But if you want that fresh, untouched powder, you'll need to hire a helicopter to take you to an off-trail slope.Approximately three seconds into his first heli-skiing experience, this dude managed to hit a rock and fall. While the fail is funny enough, it came immediately after saying, "let's do this!"Oh, and to make matters worse, his ski popped off in the fall, and it went flying down the mountain all by itself. The poor dude was left at the top of the mountain, waiting for one of his buddies to bring him his missing ski.  Read more... More about Funny, Viral Videos, Skiing, Fail, and Culture

Facebook became your news diet. Now, it's going to serve you junk.

Image
Forget about media outlets and Facebook — worry about readers. Facebook's 2 billion monthly users have come to rely on the social network as a way to keep up with the news. Now Facebook is limiting the reach of news publishers, leaving a vacuum to be filled with... well, it's anyone's best guess. The change is simple. Facebook is going to show users more posts that their friends and family have either created, shared, or commented on. In turn, Facebook is reducing the reach of pages including news outlets. That may sound innocuous, but the shift turns up the dial on the signals that help amplify fake news. And there's no way to tell how bad this is going to get — not even Facebook knows for sure. SchadenCoin: Why you love to celebrate cryptocurrency crashes

Image
Remember, remember, the third week of January 2018, during which Bitcoin just fell on its face, worth half of what it was a month ago, down over $10,000 per coin in value. On Tuesday night, the top post on Reddit's r/Cryptocurrency page was a link to a suicide help hotline. No doubt: Anyone who got in on Cryptocurrency a month ago, compelled by the sudden surge of got-rich-quick wealth that seemingly emerged from this newfangled digital currency? They've just lost a lot of money. And some people...are absolutely loving it. Wow that #bitcoin sure is a fantastic “store of value”, folkspic.twitter.com/hFrjJEmFfz— Jackson Palmer (@ummjackson) January 17, 2018Read more...
